This may seem unusual, having an art walk on an online blog! You often see Art Walks in some towns and cities when all the local art galleries have an open evening and patrons can walk from gallery to gallery to see what is on offer. With online sites, that is pretty difficult to achieve, but a group of artists are trying the idea of posting some new work during the week and then having a round-up of the various works on the Friday. So, this is our first attempt.
I posted an article about my favorite photos earlier this week. To be honest, this was very difficult as I don’t really know how to identify my favorites as it changes over time, but I made a valiant attempt! It should really be you, the viewer, who chooses your favorites – so please feel free to let me know in the comments!
The first artist whose “gallery” we are visiting is Katrina Gunn’s excellent drawing and painting blog. We have had some interesting discussions in the past about digital painting, and this time Katrina has come up with something that was new to me – an online jigsaw application from Microsoft that allows you to create and complete jigsaws using your own images, and she identified her favorite drawings and sketches for passing some restful time with an online jigsaw!
This example is of a goldfish (which looks great in the completed oil pastel drawing), but I can imagine is a bear to complete as a jigsaw puzzle. You can, of course, get real physical jigsaws of her work (and mine) if you follow the links to her site.
Next up was Jo Wortman, another artist with a wide variety of styles and materials (at least I think so – I’m not a physical artist in that sense. I just have a keyboard and tablet!). Here are some examples of Jo’s work from her blog post.
Jo also did a great ink drawing of a scallop (the shell not the cooked mollusc):
Jim Hughes is rightly famous for his deep involvement in planning his images and then working tirelessly to put the plan into action and finally come up with images that really represent that idea. He included a selection of very different images in his gallery, a selection of which is shown below. You really need to visit the post to get the full idea behind his work.
I’m particularly partial to the orange and green zinnia – almost capturing the essence of fall colors in one image perhaps.
What that rounds out our art walk – not too many artists in this first visit, but as these things become more popular, more people will attend!
