As you will see from my articles, we have been enjoying Viking cruises for some time, mainly ocean ones, but we have also cruised the Douro in Portugal and the Mississippi in the USA. Although Viking are more expensive than many cruises, the lack of crowding, the lack of endless extra fees and the general peacefulness of their boats makes it worthwhile.
But, it took us many cruises to realize that we were missing a significant saving on the price. We usually book the next cruise when on a ship – you get extra discounts and can sit with a Cruise Director to choose the right dates and cabin and it always annoyed me that we did the booking ourselves but anyone using a travel agent got a hidden discount because of the commission Viking pays to their agent.
A couple of years ago, a Cruise Director told me that we could have a booking made on the ship transferred to an agent of our choice within a period (I think 90 days from booking). Some agents are willing to feed some of the commission back to us as a credit on the cruise. And it worked – we found a very helpful agent, explained what we wanted to do, and he ensured that a credit was applied to our account when we actually took the cruise.
We have been 100% happy with our agent and he is very easy to work with. If you want to make use of this extra discount, you could find your own agent, or use the one we use:
