We have lived here by Cheat Lake in Morgantown since 2016 and this is the first time that I think we have seen the lake really freeze over. Cheat Lake is fed by a river and so the water is always on the move, but this January has been cold for day after day and so first we saw the ice start to form in the shallower areas:
As you can see, the ice hasn’t really managed to form beyond the second bridge in this first image. But a couple of days later we had another snowfall and this time, it nicely coated the entire lake:
Looking in the opposite direction upriver, we get this lovely scene of the fresh snow on the frozen river and lake:
Not wanting to leave any photo opportunity unfilled, I recharged my drone again and stood out in the cold as the sun started to set a couple of evenings later:
A lovely evening and I really like the way the remaining light from the sun is warming up the hills on the left and giving extra dimensions to the image.
Finally, turning around (or at least spinning the drone in the sky), we see the reason we have clouds in the sky! The two power stations just outside Morgantown are pumping steam into the air. We have to stay warm, I guess!
All my images are available as prints on metal, acrylic, canvas or framed as well as on many other products in my store.

28 Jan 2022Great image, outs standing flying in cold weather. My favorite is the sunset on Cheat Lake. You inspired me to do a frozen lake flight.

29 Jan 2022Sorry – this got stuck in spam for some reason. Yes, I do like these frozen images and agree with the favorite being that sunset one! It is pretty cold on the hands and finger though. I can just about manage one flight and then it is time for home!

16 Feb 2022I do the opposite – walk around the banks of a frozen creek here in Minneapolis, looking for photos of ice and water.
