I last reported on the sales of wall art prints to collectors in mid-July and I certainly enjoy looking back at what people have found to be a perfect fit with that empty space on their wall! As a photographer now for many years, my aim is to travel to places that intrigue and interest me (including around my own home) and try to capture something that is out of the ordinary. If all I do is to create an image and people think – I could have taken that on my phone – then I haven’t really achieved very much!
But how do you tell whether you have hit that sweet spot and really created something that someone likes so much that they want it on their wall at home or in the office? I also have many more images on my computer than I put on my portfolio sites as I try to really determine which of several images of the same place deserve a place in my portfolio. Pretty nerve wracking sometimes!
I also try to think about why someone wants a particular photograph. Is it because it is their current home, they were brought up there or perhaps had that special vacation – a honeymoon perhaps – and this image reminds them of that time? I tend to think the latter for this first sale. Rather unusually, this was ordered on a wood print, which would normally dull down the contrast a bit, but the buyer always knows best! They didn’t return it in their 30-day money back guarantee period! Thanks to that buyer from Wheeling, West Virginia!
Looking at this, I obviously forgot one of the other major reasons for a piece of artwork. A reminder of happy days at college! Perhaps someone from the University of Pittsburgh has this on their office wall in Mars, Pennsylvania!
There must be vacations in the air, because my next sale was for a 36-inch glossy canvas print of this beautiful beach on the west coast of Oahu in Hawaii. This area of Oahu is much less popular with tourists than the main areas on the north coast and, of course, Waikiki and I only visited once, but I am glad I captured each beach along the coast. This one must have a special meaning to a buyer from Waianae in Hawaii.
Perhaps the college link was uppermost in the mind of a buyer from Washington, PA for this new photo of the moon rising over the WVU Coliseum in Morgantown. The photo was taken in September of this year, and I did share it with a group of people on Facebook interested in Morgantown. I hope that they did perhaps see it there and I hope the 24-inch glossy canvas print will look great on their wall!
I was really pleased how this one came together. It was a beautifully clear night, and I was ready with my long telephoto lens and tripod as the sun set and the moon started to rise!
The final sale only happened today and here we are back in Oahu in Hawaii. This, again, is somewhere that was new to me back in 2020 just before Covid was discovered and we went to the Tantalus Overlook to see the panorama of Waikiki and Diamond Head. The view is great but there were a couple of these trees presumably bent by the winds coming in off the ocean and I thought that made a much, much more interesting image that just a straightforward snapshot of the city! It wasn’t just as easy as it seemed, as people like sitting on it for selfies and there are also metal railings there and an adjacent tree that gets in the way a bit, but I was very pleased with the end result.
A buyer from Vernon, CT bought a 28-inch framed print of this lovely scene.
And my final sale was probably to an ex-student of Georgetown University in Washington DC with a 16inch glossy canvas print of White Gravenor Hall at the college.
Thanks to all these collectors for finding and enjoying my work – you make it all worthwhile!
And, finally, if anyone knows this couple below, perhaps they would like a print for their social media posts!

29 Oct 2022I don’t know about you, but the prevalence of Hawai’i photos does not surprise me. Both of my parents still like to talk about visits there fondly.

29 Oct 2022Yes, and they are perhaps the sort of thing you would want on your wall as well – warm, pretty colors!
