Back in April, I listed a few of my popular images that had sold as wall art to collectors around the world. I do this from time to time, partly to see what is really striking a chord with someone looking for a print for their home or office as opposed to the easy way of clicking “like” on a social media post. I saw a few sale notices coming in this month and so the time is ripe to revisit the list!
I’ll work in historic order from April onwards which means that this composite of the well-loved Mountaineer Statue in front of the historic Woodburn Hall is first.
This sepia treatment was meant to give it more of a historic feel. It is a shame that the statue is in such an “away” place next to the modern building opposite Woodburn Hall – it could so easily have been installed somewhere in this circle!
I also sold a different version of this same idea – this time with a snow-covered Mountaineer against an evening shot of Woodburn Hall.
I do have a few more of the statue standing in various places – but these are certainly the popular ones! I must have quite a following with ties to Morgantown as I sold two other images of the town recently. The first is one that I showed in the April article, of the Harvest Moon rising over the Coliseum on the Evansdale campus of WVU. The other is a favorite of mine – the sunset behind Woodburn Hall. This actually sold twice, once as it is shown here and one with the caption “West Virginia University, Morgantown” on the image:
This does seem to strike a chord with people, and I think the lovely warm colors of the building with the lights illuminating the entrance doors does make for a very welcoming print.
Going further afield, a collector was impressed with a visit to the Great Sand Dunes National Park in Colorado and liked the look of my panorama. Although I have other images of this park including ones that show close-ups of the dunes with tiny figures giving some idea of the scale, this one was taken from some distance away and was “stitched together” from multiple separate images. The very dramatic clouds in the sky help introduce more interest on the dunes themselves and the mountains give an intriguing backdrop.
And another surprising sale for me – a beach scene of Cupecoy Beach on the Caribbean island of St Martin (or Sint Maarten). This fascinating island is half French and half Dutch – hence the two names. I think this beach is on the French side and someone liked it enough to buy both a print and a phone case. Perhaps they live there!
Moving further away, I sold two prints of California – the first was a lovely sunset image of the harbor of Avalon on the small island of Catalina off the coast of California:
My wife and I travelled here during a vacation in California on the ferry and stayed in a lovely hotel on the cliffside above the town. In fact, this was our view from the terrace of the hotel. Beautiful!
Going even more westerly, I sold one of my intriguing prints of a panorama over the Kalalau Valley in the garden island of Kauai to a collector from Farmington Hills in Michigan. This viewpoint is famous in Hawaii, but the weather again makes a difference to what it looks like. This image was taken quite late in the day and the sun was just hidden out of the frame, but it made the lighting much more interesting than if it had been high in the sky:
And my almost final image for this post is one that sold via a wholesale distributor called Made and Curated at Perigold, that sell prints for offices and other bulk locations (at least I think so!). But it was still very pleasing to see that one of my images of San Diego was recently sold by them:
The water in this image is artificial – the real water alongside the city is much choppier and darker looking than this and so I took some artistic license and improved it. Obviously, someone liked that look!
I also sold a second version of the San Diego skyline. This was taken the evening before when we had more clouds in the sky which gives it a very different look. Again, the water is artificial:
I actually think I prefer this second version. It just goes to show that when you are in a city, don’t be happy with just a snapshot of an interesting scene. If it really is interesting enough, go back again and see what it looks like with different lighting conditions.

18 Jul 2022Yes, they come as a very pleasant surprise! The one from Perigold of the print of Avalon was a big surprise. I had forgotten that I had signed up to using them as an agent.
