Each year, the Morgantown Art Association hosts its annual competition for all types of wall art. Watercolor, acrylic, oil, charcoal, pencil, fabric collage – and, of course, photography. Last Friday evening was the reception and awards night after judging by the famous water colorist, David R Smith. He openly admitted that it was hard for a watercolor specialist to judge across such a wide range of media, but in the end, it came down to technical achievement and the extent to which he could feel the mood of the subject.
Well, I’m very pleased to report that he did feel the mood in one of the two images I entered into the show – the photograph I made of the sun rising above Valley Falls near Fairmont in West Virginia. The prints were printed and framed, of course and this one received the first prize in the Photography section of the competition.
This image was created from multiple separate shots taken by my drone above the river and looking back at the waterfall and the sun hidden behind the light clouds. As you can see, the mist was also clearing from the area which adds a nice balance to the folds of the hills covered by the fall colors of the trees. I wrote an article about Valley Falls a few months back if you want to see more images of this lovely state park.
