I’ve been selling prints of my work for some time, to allow people to bring some of their favorite places to life on the walls of their home or office, but last year, I was invited to provide my best images to a new company that is creating wall-sized murals for those that really want to make a design statement! I must admit I found it difficult to imagine just which of my 2 or 3000 images would best suit being printed wall-sized as I had never really thought of decorating my own home in that style, but I have increasingly seen large scale murals of many different designs, and it is clear that it is a growing trend. We stayed in a hotel in New Braunfels last weekend and there was a large photo of the Guadalupe River (at least I think it was – the person behind the check-in desk wasn’t sure) and that made me decide to go through my photos to see which new images I could upload to this new company. In this article, I’ll look at some of the designs that have already been chosen for display as wall-sized murals and would really welcome feedback on any other of my photographs that you think would look great on a wall!

The first one I have chosen is one I created from a photo from the Staten Island Ferry on a pretty grey day, but this charcoal sketch version looks like it could really dominate a room! In the nine months I have been represented by Wallism, it has been purchased 5 times. Wallism offers two types of mural – one on traditional paste-the-wall wallpaper rolls and one version that is self-adhesive. I don’t get to know exactly what their customers purchase, but I think at least one sale was probably about 20 feet wide. How I would like to see the actual result on someone’s wall!
Also with 5 sales, is this sunrise image of the Smokey Mountain National Park taken way back in February 2011:

One much closer to my old home in West Virginia is the beautiful fall trees image of the road to Coopers Rock outside Morgantown. Advertised on their website as West Virginia Roads, this has also been purchased five times so far:

Also with five sales is another sunrise – this time over Emerald Bay on Lake Tahoe in California:

By now you can imagine that what sells for a wall mural is a nice landscape. But then this next one has sold four times:

Or this detailed photo of a beautifully restored car seen at an auto show in Virginia:

Perhaps that is on the wall of a car enthusiasts’ garage?
My largest sale (in terms of the size) must have been this black and white image of the mountains of Alaska as the ship we were on was leaving Valdez. I think this must have been at least 30×10 feet or perhaps even larger. That must be spectacular somewhere! It would be great to just come across one of my murals one day in a hotel perhaps!

What has also sold three times is an antique map that I restored of Pittsburgh. I have other cities drawn by the same artist, but for some reason, people in Pittsburgh seem to like this on their wall!

All told, I have just over 100 images and drawings now available on their website and have had 52 orders through the end of December last year. I still struggle to think of what to add to that portfolio – any advice would be greatly welcomed!

7 Mar 2025Thanks for taking the trouble to comment! I do like to think about someone putting one of my photos on their wall – especially at this size. I wish there was a way to see the final result!
